Zugzwang  (Brownstein/Amarante)

If I could pause my time, well I’d be much more poised

Peace is pruned in worry, silence lost in noise

and there’d be far less movement, there’d be room to breath

But it would be so lonely in a world with only me

If I could stay here standing, I’d most surely win

There’s just no place left to go that I haven’t been

Nothing lasts forever, for no king or queen

But every step from here on out is gonna be what it’s meant to be

So many what if’s, what gives, asking how much more can I take?

I’m tired of looking up at the clouds, asking for a break

I can take my chances yeah I know I’ll be okay

‘Cause whatever the circumstance is, the truth will always find its way

If I could furnish movement, I would hardly stop

I stood with Mother Night, before a cop

He seemed to take my absence for an empty plea

When all I’ve ever had was my curiosity

If I could press my preference, I would know my voice

Don’t ask for me to change if there’s not a choice

Would it make you angry, on your little yacht?

Well I’d prefer not to be what I’m not.

So many what if’s, what gives, asking how much more can I take?

I’m tired of looking up at the clouds, asking for a break

I can take my chances yeah I know I’ll be okay

‘Cause whatever the circumstance is, the truth will always find its way

There’s nothing I can do and all the options that I’ve weighed

This next move won’t be pretty but I can’t just walk away

Gotta bit the grit and take a hit, tomorrow’s another day

There’s nothing left for me to do so long as I’m stuck here in Zugzwang

If we could play again, I'd welcome the game

We've danced this dance before and it’s been the same

No pressure for pleasure, I never wanted to quit

There’s beauty in what was, what is, and what hasn’t happened yet

So many what if’s, what gives, asking how much more can i take?

I’m tired of looking up at the clouds, asking for a break

I can take my chances yeah I know I’ll be okay

‘Cause whatever the circumstance is, the truth will always find its way

Here in Zugzwang
